What is Endodontics?
- by siteadmin
Endodontics is a dental specialty focused on the study and treatment of the dental pulp. This is done with the help of biocompatible materials. The treatments can last as long as the natural teeth. Generally, recovery time is minimal, and patients can return to their regular activities shortly after the procedure.
Root canals are performed to remove inflamed or infected pulp
A root canal is a procedure performed to remove the inflamed or infected pulp from a tooth. It is a complex process and is part science and part art. If a tooth is infected or has a deep cavity, the dentist will need to perform a root canal to relieve the pain. If the cavity is deep enough, the dentist may also use x-rays or cone-beam CT to diagnose the extent of the decay or infection. If the pain is prolonged, it may indicate an abscess. If a tooth is infected with an abscess, it may not require a root canal procedure.
Root canal therapy is a popular method for saving a tooth. This procedure removes the inflamed pulp inside the tooth and disinfects the inside of the tooth. Once the inflamed pulp has been removed, a filling is placed in the space and the tooth is filled with a protective material. The pulp is the soft tissue that makes up the tooth and contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Root canal therapy is usually necessary after periodontal disease, or a deep cavity has formed in a tooth.
Biocompatible materials are used to fill the root canals
Biocompatible materials have helped to improve dental treatment techniques. They can be used in root canal medication, temporary fillings, definitive fillings, and apical surgeries. Among the common materials used in endodontics is calcium silicate cement, which interacts with biological tissues and stimulates biomineralization processes. However, one of the main challenges associated with endodontic treatments is removal of biofilms, which remain in the complex anatomical structures of the root canal system.
To perform root canal treatment, a dentist must make a diagnosis based on the tooth's condition. This process requires a thorough examination and digital X-rays of the infected tooth. Afterwards, the affected area of the mouth is numbed with a local anesthetic. The infected tooth is then opened using tiny instruments. A biocompatible material, such as gutta-percha, is then placed inside the root canal. The filling is then sealed with adhesive cement to protect the tooth and to prevent it from leaking.
Root canal filling materials are biocompatible based on their biological properties. This ensures that they do not cause local or systemic tissue irritation and allow the regeneration of apical tissues. There have been few reports of adverse effects of root canal filling materials in patients.
Recovery time is short
This treatment is used to treat dental infections caused by trauma or untreated tooth decay. Recovery time for endodontics is generally very short and usually accompanied by a short period of pain. You'll usually experience pain in one or several teeth, which may eventually progress to a dull ache in all of your teeth on one side. Often, this condition is first noticed during a routine x-ray.
Although root canal treatment is a major dental procedure, recovery time is minimal. You can usually drive and go to work immediately after the procedure. Generally, your tooth won't be too painful, but you should avoid eating hard or chewing on it for several days.
Endodontists must complete two to three years of additional education in an advanced specialty program in endodontics after four years of dental school. They specialize in the study of dental pulp diseases and how to treat them.
Endodontists focus solely on treatments of the dental pulp by restricting their practice to endodontics. They perform an average of 25 root canal treatments per week, compared to two by general dentists. Endodontists do not place fillings or clean teeth; instead, they focus on diagnosing and treating tooth pain. They are skilled specialists in determining the source of difficult-to-diagnose oral and facial pain.
Endodontists employ specialized techniques to ensure that their patients are completely comfortable during their procedures. They are experts at administering numbing medications, particularly to patients who have historically had difficulty becoming and remaining numb. In addition to treating you comfortably, patients will be relieved of tooth pain following their root canal procedure as the pulp infection or inflammation heals.
